Hyderabad: Fund crunch hits the implementation of the centrally-sponsored National Health Mission which is aimed at improving health standards of people in Telangana State.

It is learnt that the TS government had diverted over Rs 100 crore released in 2015-16 financial year by the Centre under the mission for other purposes. According to health department official, the Centre had released Rs 160 crore for the NHM programme during 2015-16. The money was credited to the state health society’s account.

Of the Rs 160 crore, the state government had released only Rs 56 crore. Sources say that the balance Rs 104 crore were diverted by the government for other purposes. Even the matching grant of 25 percent has not been released, sources said.

This has resulted in the delay in payment of incentive for women who undergo institutional delivery. Such women, it may be mentioned here are eligible for Rs 1000 as incentive under Janani Sishu Suraksha Karyakramam.

A doctor said that in Medak district incentives to the tune of Rs 6 crore was pending for those who had delivered in that hospital. In the backdrop of this situation, the Centre is understood to have told the state government that unless the state releases the matching grant and clears the dues, it may not release the second installment of Rs 250 crore. As a result of fund crunch the hospitals were asking the attendants of the pregnant women to get blood and other emergency medicines from outside.
