Addressing a huge gathering of farmers and students at the foundation laying ceremony of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University on Thursday, the Union Minister for Agriculture, Radha Mohan Singh, chief guest for the occasion, said NDA was a farmer-friendly government and extensively working towards it betterment.
Observing that about 60 per cent of agricultural land in India doesn’t have irrigation and that they only depend on rain water, he said Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY), introduced by the Modi government, not only envisages huge investments (to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore for the period 2015-16 to 2019-20), but would also increase cultivable area and improve water usage efficiency to reduce wastage of water and to achieve optimisation of water resources.
“The goal is to get more crop per drop,” he said, adding that Irrigation Planning Committees at the district-level would prepare plans for the same, allowing States to develop their own irrigation plans and take up projects based on it.
Pointing-out that the soils in India were getting contaminated and losing fertility, he said the Soil Health Cards to be given to 14 crore farmers across the country would benefit the farmers. “The soil of India is not only soil, but our mother. Until the soil is sick, her children, the farmers, couldn’t be happy,” he added.
He also disclosed the intention of the Prime Minister to introduce e-connectivity and e-marketing practices across the markets selling agricultural produce across different States, bringing all the markets on to one platform where there would be transparency in pricing across the markets. He said this would help the farmer from falling prey to the licencees in markets who decide the prices as they like.
Lauding the efforts of agricultural scientists in India for successfully producing 93 new varieties of drought-resistant seeds, he wished that what was experimented in the 100 research centers across India should reach the agricultural lands, benefiting the farmers.
“It is not because of Modi or KCR that the farmers are sad, but because of the failure of the previous governments in addressing their problems,” he said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister K Chnadrashekar Rao congratulated the people of Gajwel and Medak, and said the three institutions- the horticultural university, centre of excellence for fruits with Indo-Israel collaboration and the forest college for which foundations were laid would not only benefit the farmers, but would also help the students in grabbing employment in these sectors.
Calling Telangana the ‘Seed Bowl of India’, he said there was a great scope for producing quality seeds here. He also announced that many go-downs with a capacity of storing 17 lakh metric tonnes of produce were almost at the completion stage.
Announcing Rs 20 crore for setting up of cold storage at Vantimamidi Market Committee, which would give flexibility of time to farmers in deciding to sell their produce, he said that by April 30, people would start seeing the results of the water-grid.
Thanking the Central government for increasing the budget on micro-irrigation, he hoped that whatever proposals the State would send to the Centre, would be accepted and sanctioned.
Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and State Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas too requested Radha Mohan Singh for funds from the Centre towards the construction of the university and for developing horticulture and agriculture in Telangana.
Irrigation Minister Harish Rao, Forest Minister Jogu Ramanna, Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy, Director General of Indian Council for Agricultural Research S Ayyappan, MLAs and MLCs were also present on the occasion.
