Nizamabad: During this season, the turmeric rates are facing a downward spiral at the Nizamabad agriculture market yard. Due to the drought conditions prevailing in the district, the yields on turmeric have fallen and now the rates were slashed in South India’s biggest turmeric market in the district.
According to reports, the cultivation of turmeric fell drastically in the districts of North Telangana. Every year, turmeric is cultivated in North Telangana region on a large scale.
In Nizamabad district, it is usually cultivated on 15,000 hectares and other districts like Warangal, Adilabad, Karimnagar and a few places in Medak district, it is cultivated on nearly 8,000 hectares. This year, it was cultivated on 12,000 hectares in Nizamabad and in other districts, the cultivation fell drastically.
With the depletion in ground water resources and scanty rainfall in many areas, crops in several areas withered away and the yield per hectare was very low. Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, Sunanda Rani, Joint Director of Horticulture said that nearly the area of cultivation fell by 40 percent due to the drought conditions and 10 to 15 percent of the turmeric crop dried up due to the lack of ground water and another 15 percent gave low yield.
Sunanda said that every year nearly, 85, 000 metric tonnes of turmeric were produced in the Nizamabad district, but this year, the produce was only 30 to 40,000 metric tons, In other Telangana districts also, the yield on turmeric decreased drastically.
However, on the other side, the turmeric farmers were facing miserable conditions, because they already lost nearly 50 percent crop due to the drought and gthe yield also fell by 50 percent. To protest their crops turmeric farmers dug many bore wells in their fields by borrowing money.
But many bore wells dried up fpluning the farmers in debts. The rates on turmeric have fallen in the largest market yard in Nizamabad. Sama Chinna Gangadhar, Turmeric farmer, Hasa-kotturu of Kammarpally mandal said that last year, they had got good yields and rates were better than this year.
Last year, they got Rs 7,000/- per quintal for Prathbha variety, but this year they got only 6,000/- and this year they received 5,000 only for ‘Gola (Bulb)’ variety and it was nearly above Rs 6,000/- last year he added.
