Hyderabad: Vemula Rohith Chakravarti, Dalit research scholar, who committed suicide in the University of Hyderabad, did not manifest any suicidal tendency before the fateful incident. After expulsion from the hostel five research scholars, they had been living in the camp at the shopping complex on the university campus. On the fateful day, Rohith had visited the camp in the afternoon and left for the New Researcher Scholars (NRS) hostel.

He was found hanging in a room in the NRS hostel using blue banner of Ambedkar Students Association on Sunday night. In fact he informed his mother Radhika that he would visit home on Sunday. In a five-page suicide note recovered from the room, he mentioned how he always looked at the stars and dreamt of being a writer.

Irony is that the students had to inform Rohith’s parents regarding his suicide rather than the administration.Ever since the university’s decision to expel them from the hostel, Rohith was depressed and frustrated. In fact in letter to the university Vice-Chancellor in December last year, he asked to supply a “nice rope” to the rooms of all Dalit students through the t chief warden.

His friends who were close to Rohith termed him as a brilliant student and source of inspiration to everyone.“We know that he was unhappy with the university’s decision, but did show any suicidal tendency,” Zohail, President, Students’ Union, UoH.

Another expelled research scholar, D Prashanth said “ Rohith used to say why VC is not responding to our protest. He felt really bad about it. But he never showed any symptoms of suicide.” Rohith hails from a poor family in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He was holder of two Junior Research Fellowships. He joined as a research scholar in science, technology and society studies department.

But from the last seven months he has been facing financial crisis has fellowship was stopped. This led him to borrow from his money his friends to send home. “He is the sole bread winner in the house. He is used to get Rs 25000 per month and used to send home Rs 10,000.

However, as his fellowship was stopped from last seven months he did face a lot of financial problem but he somehow managed,” said one of Rohith’s friends who did not be quoted.
