Nizamabad: With the growing incidents of smuggling of illicit liquor and arrack in the district from the neighbouring States of Maharashtra, Karnataka and also from Goa, the excise department has decided to tighten the screws and upgrade the check posts at sensitive spots in the district.

Steps are on the anvil to modernise the Abkari check-posts as the excise department is incurring huge losses due to the unabated flow of arrack from the other States. According to reports, spurious liquor is also being smuggled into Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Khammam and Adilabad districts as there are no facilities at the check-posts to tighten the vigilance.

Liquor is being supplied without any checks in the hotels, dhabas on the outskirts of the district. As Nizamabad is situated on the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka, it has become handy to carry out the illicit trade of liquor. In this connection, the officials have decided to modernise the check-posts in Saloora village of Bodhan Mandal, and the Salampad check-post in Madnoor Mandal in the Nizamabad district.

An integrated check-post would also be installed in one of the places. The modernisation works of the inter-state check-posts would start soon. They have decided to construct godown, install closed-circuit TV cameras and ensure that all the necessary facilities are provided at the check-posts for effective surveillance.
