Congress pulls out of Rajya Sabha polls in Telangana
The Congress Legislature Party on Saturday has decided to stay away from contesting the ensuing Rajya Sabha elections, due to less numbers.
Hyderabad: The Congress Legislature Party on Saturday has decided to stay away from contesting the ensuing Rajya Sabha elections, due to less numbers.
The decision was taken during the CLP meeting held on Assembly premises on Saturday. Speaking to media persons later, Leader of Oppositions in Assembly K Jana Reddy (Assembly) and Mohammed Ali Shabbir (Council) said that the Congress party did not have required numbers in Assembly to contest the Rajya Sabha polls.
Further, it was not in favour of encouraging cross voting to get votes for its nominee. Therefore, it has decided to stay away from the polls. Jana Reddy informed that the CLP has discussed the failure of Congress party to win the Palair byelections.
He said corrective steps would be taken to rectify the mistakes and plug loopholes. He said that the party has also discussed the strategy to fight against the ‘anti-people’ policies of the TRS Government.
Shabbir Ali informed that the Congress party would celebrate the Telangana Formation Day on June 2 across the State by hosting national flag at party headquarters and all other offices. He said that the Telangana Congress would send a special message to AICC president Sonia Gandhi for granting statehood for Telangana State.
During the meeting, argument took place between Jana Reddy and Member of Parliament Palvai Govardhan Reddy when Jana Reddy questioned the rationality of him and V Hanumantha Rao speaking to media on controversial issues within the party. Govardhan Reddy argued that he wanted to tell the truth and would maintain his stance.
Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao, who also attended the CLP meeting, later announced that he would launch a mass movement against the "anti-people" policies of TRS Government from Siddipet. He thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi for making him the Rajya Sabha MP for three terms.
He said he would not be contesting the elections this time due to lack of required numbers with the Congress party. However, he thanked senior leaders K Jana Reddy, Uttam Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Ali Shabbir and Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka for their support. He said since the Congress party had supported the candidature of K Keshava Rao in the last Rajya Sabha elections, it expected the TRS to reciprocate the gesture this time.
However, KCR announced the candidature of D Srinivas and Captain Lakshmikanth Rao without consulting anyone. VHR said since he would not be contesting the elections, he would dedicate his full time in strengthening the Congress party at all levels for 2019 elections. He said his mass movement would begin from Siddipet and would be organised across the Telangana State.
