Young IPS officers game for smart policing

Adilabad: Ignoring the prospects of money-spinning careers, many a young, especially those coming from the streams of engineering, medical and business management, who opted for the rigours of the police services, are in fact turning out to be a boon for the concept of smart policing and public safety.

Vikram Jeet Duggal, an Electronics and Communication Engineer, is one of those young breed of IPS officers the State have with a vision and ideology. Barely a week after he assumed the charge of Superintendent of Police of Adilabad, the official quickly got down implementing the Accident Resolution Teams (ARTs), said to be his brainchild, to minimise road accidents in the district.

Duggal actually came up with the idea of forming ART in Nalgonda district, where not even a single day passes without the news of a road accident. To address this perennial problem, Duggal, a few months ago, implemented the mission and when the initiative has begun fruition, he had to leave for Adilabad. According to the plan, ARTs will be formed taking each police circle area as a unit.

Each ART consisting of an inspector, sarpanch or the municipal authority, officials of R&B, panchayat raj, transport department, revenue and highway authority will be formed. First, each team will identify the accident-prone areas (Accident Black Spots) in their region. The teams conduct an extensive study of the accidents occurred in each Black Spot and prepare a detailed report.

Based on the reports, the ARTs will suggest an action plan to each Black Spot to curb the accidents. It may be mentioned here that defective road engineering is one of the major reasons that contribute to the increasing number of road accidents in the State.

Speaking to The Hans India on Saturday, Duggal said: “Each find out, based on the report submitted by the 31 ARTs in the district will be sent to all the Head of the departments – highways, R&B, panchayat raj, transport etc. concerned - suggesting short term and long term measures to be taken to prevent accidents at each Black Spot.”

‘By involving all the stakeholders, we are trying to create a sense of responsibility towards the public safety,’ the SP said, pointing out the success he met with in Nalgonda district. Referring to some of the measures such as placing signboards, blinkers, speed-breakers etc. to curb mishaps, he said that problems such as narrow roads, sharp turns, down gradient and potholes need to be addressed at the earliest.
