Hyderabad: It could be a huge relief to film producers as Mumbai-based digital projection company, AMF-SPDT, has offered to install digital system at a rent of Rs 3,000 a week and Rs 1200 for second week. This is in contrast to the price the existing companies like Cube, UFO and PXD are extracting at the rate of Rs 10,800 a week from producers. The new entrant is likely to bring down cost and turn out to be a boon for hundreds of small film producers.

“It will be a boon to hundreds of small film producers since we could save loads of money and also reduce strain on viewers’ eyes. Actually, we could save Rs 7,800 a week in 1.000-and-odd digital theatres in Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh which works out to Rs 78 lakh a week for these three companies.

This burden has pushed producers into financial mess. Actually, exhibitors have to install this equipment on their own or pay the rent, if hired, but these exhibitors have been shifting the rental burden on producers and distributors and laughing all the way to the bank,” lamented producer Sangisetty Dasaradh, who petitioned Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce and Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, pleading that the system brought in by new entrant should be allowed into T-town.

“We have urged both the chambers to consider giving a space for new company, since existing ones are exploiting us,” he added. Besides demanding huge sums, some digital theatres are not strictly adhering to quality of projection which should be 2K.

A few theatres are violating it and cheating viewers with poor quality screening. “In fact, a case in Supreme Court is pending against some exhibitors who have violated set guidelines and screening films at much lower resolution than mandated 2K and causing stress to the eyes of lakhs of viewers across TS and AP, which is unfortunate and illegal” said producer Nayeemuddin

When contacted, Murali Mohan, general secretary, Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce, admitted that producers and company officials are planning to hold a test screening in Hyderabad on July 4. “We have received the request and we would watch the quality of the resolution. If it is up to the prescribed guidelines, we would discuss with our members to take a call on SPDT because members’ interests is our priority,” he said.
