Warangal: While the swollen Godavari river is just a few notches below the final danger warning level at Bhadrachalam threatening to wreak a havoc in the Agency, and the cumulative discharge into the Bay of Bengal is running into lakhs of cusecs in the coast of Andhra for the last three days, the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP), the lifeline of north Telangana, appeared like an abandoned reservoir.

Albeit the rain has been consistent in north Telangana districts and the upstream areas of Maharashtra for the last few days, the SRSP has barely received significant inflows since the onset of monsoon this year but for the breather it got in the last 24 hours.

With clouds opening up in the catchment areas of Nanded district, the SRSP started to receive inflows from the Vishnupuri Project. This apart, the project received significant inflows from Gaddennavagu project of Adilabad district. As a result, the almost bone dry storage level reached 1,056.2 feet (10.2 tmc ft) as against its full reservoir level of 1,091 ft (90 tmc ft).

More or less, the figures match with the last year’s during the same period, indicating the plight of farmers in the command area (nearly 10 lakh acres) of the project. Speaking to The Hans India, SRSP Executive Engineer B Rama Rao said: “As of now, the inflows are close to 30,000 cusecs. The inflows coming from Gaddennavagu project stopped with rains receding on its catchment areas.”

If the scanty rainfall in upstream areas is haunting the SRSP for the last few years, the lower reaches of Godavari is in full flow amplified by overflowing of several streams and rivulets in Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam districts.

Meanwhile, road connectivity to several villages under Cherla, Venkatapuram and Wajedu mandals in Khammam district was cut off due to overflowing of local streams and rivulets. Road connectivity between Bhadrachalam and Etapaka, Kunavaram, VR Puram and Chintoor mandal in East Godavari district is also cut off. Power supply in Etapaka mandal was disrupted.

The water level in the river after hovering better part of the day at 52.4 feet at Bhadrachalam came down to 52 feet at 8 pm with second flood alert still in force, according to officials.
