Aggrieved stage protest at the Secretariat, demand Health Minister’s scalp

Hyderabad: Students who had appeared in EAMCET II and achieved good ranks, along with their worried parents demanded the government punish all the accused rather than holding the entrance afresh. They held demonstrations in front of Secretariat since morning hours of Thursday and threatened to approach the court, if re-examination was announced.

The students and parents asked the state government to punish the culprits who were involved in the scam, rather than forcing 56,000 students and parents to go through the stress once again. Some of the protestors, who said they had worked hard, with some of them slogging for 18 hours a day, were later taken into police custody.

A few demanded that the government should penalise the candidates who resorted to unlawful means in achieving good ranks. “Why punish all the aspirants, when there are a handful of the candidates involved in this and who can be easily identified,” said P Srujana, who got 1,120th rank.

Some students and parents had already zeroed in on some of the reputed colleges in the city before the news broke that CID arrested the accused involved in EAMCET II leak. “The CID report shattered our hopes.

We worked hard during the last few months giving up sleep and food. After we found ourselves in a secure position, we also decided on the choice of colleges. We hope that the government does not make us write the exams once again,” said K Amulya, who got 818 rank.

Parents, including women in large numbers, raised slogans demanding, “We want justice”, “Down Down Health Minister”, “CM KCR should interfere”. Several parents asked the government to follow the procedure of PGCET – 2014, where the government had only penalised the perpetrators involved in leak of the entrance papers and precisely quarantined the students who were involved in the racket. “Is it not possible for the government to precisely weed out such students who benefitted from leak?” asked one of the protesting parents.

Representatives of political parties like Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who also took part in the demonstration demanded that health minister C Lakshma Reddy should own moral responsibility for the EAMCET-II paper leak and resign from the post honourably. Later, some of the students met home minister Naini Narsimha Reddy. The students and parents remained tense after the government gave a clarification that it would take an appropriate decision after getting a report from the CID on the EAMCET-II paper leak.
