Hyderabad: Buoyed over the success of mobile cancer screening test vehicles launched in Khammam, Warangal and Mahbubnagar on pilot basis recently, the state government has decided to extend the facility to all districts.

According to official sources, the government has decided to establish cancer screening test centres in all district headquarters which would be equipped with mobile van facility. The mobile vans will be sent all remote areas across the district and will conduct cancer screening tests and collect samples.

State Medical and Health department officials said the programme aims at screening people aged above 30 for oral cancer and women aged above 30 for breast and cervical cancer. Most of the cancer cases detected so far were in third or fourth stages. With mobile screening vans it would become possible to detect cancer cases at early stage and thereby the mortality rate can be reduced.

Those detected with cancer would be provided treatment and medicines free of cost in the district hospitals. The officials said that the Union Health Ministry would extend assistance in the government’s endeavour to contain cancer in the state. In future the government also proposes to equip the PHCS (Primary Health Centres) with equipment for cancer screening tests.

To provide advanced treatment to the poor cancer patients, proposals were also sent to the Union government for setting up of Regional Cancer Centre and strengthening of MNJ Cancer Hospital in Hyderabad.
