​Hyderabad: The famous Balapur Ganesh laddu fetched a record breaking price of Rs 14.65 lakh in the open auction held before the start of Ganesh immersion procession here on Thursday.

Excitement marked the Balapur laddu auction. A Keesara businessman, Skylab Reddy got the laddu for Rs 14.65 lakh weighing about 21 kg. A total of 25 devotees, including 16 who had participated in last year’s auction participated in the bidding.

“It is my luck that helped me win the Lord’s laddu in the auction,” an elated Skylab Reddy told reporters. He said he has been participating in the auction for last two years and finally succeeded this year.

He said he would distribute the laddu among the devotees. The auction started with a base price of Rs 10.32 lakh. This was the last year’s auction price.

Former Mayor and MLA Teegala Krishna Reddy also participated in the auction and gave up after bidding for Rs 9 lakh. Manne Balwanth Reddy quoted Rs 14.62 lakh, Kolanu Ram Reddy Rs 13.8 lakh, Shailendar Reddy Rs 12.85 lakh. The funds yielded from the laddu will be spent on the development of and welfare activities.

The Utsav committee members felicitated Skylab Reddy and presented him with two kilogram silver. The tradition of auctioning laddu started in 1980 with formation of Balapur Ganesh Utsav Committee.

First time the laddu was auctioned for Rs 450 by K Mohan Reddy, a local resident. Since then the bid amount has been going up.
