Hyderabad: Stating that life was too short to get involved in having enemies, Governor ESL Narasimhan called upon the people to give up hatred and live life happily.

Speaking at the annual ‘Alai Balai’ programme organised by BJP leader and Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya on Wednesday, the Governor said one should shed the 10 “avagunalu” (bad habits) during Dasara. He said ‘Alai Balai’ was a day for love and friendship and hugging them.

“I congratulate Dattatreya for this initiative.” He said that life was too short to quarrel. “There is no meaning in having enmity with others. Talk kindly and do not hurt others with harsh words and take all along with you,” Narasimhan said.

Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, speaking on the occasion, said that there was a need to preserve the culture and practices. “Social harmony, community cohesion, culture and traditional practices should be preserved,” he said.

Senior Congress leader V Hanumanth Rao advised Dattatreya to take up ‘Alai Balai’ in Rayalaseema region next year. “There is a bigger need to take up ‘Alai Balai’ in Rayalaseema, where people are known for their rivalries.

Dattatreyaji and Venkaiahji, it is up to you whether you will hold it in Kurnool or in Anantapur, but take up next ‘Alai Balai’ in Rayalaseema,” he said.

Film director R Narayana Murthy said similar programmes should be organised across the country. Justice Subhashan Reddy wanted the government to declare holiday on ‘Alai Balai’ day and also wanted the word ‘Alai Balai’ to be included in Oxford dictionary.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Y Sujana Chowdhary, Telangana Ministers E Rajender, Naini Narasimha Reddy, MPs C Malla Reddy, BB Patil, TTDP president L Ramana, BJP leaders including State president K Laxman, BJLP leader G Kishan Reddy, P Muralidhar Rao, Ch Ramachandra Reddy, NVSS Prabhakar, T Raja Singh and others attended the function.
