Hyderabad: A resident of Hyderabad Syed Vicaruddin was presented with a Gold Medal by the Palestinian government for his contribution to the Palestinian cause for the last 50 years.

Ambassador of Palestine Adnan Abu Alhaija presented the gold medal to Syed Vicaruddin, Chairman of the Indo-Arab League Hyderabad (IALH) and his organisation at his residence at Asif Nagar in Hyderabad. The medal was presented on the occasion of Indo-Arab League Hyderabad’s golden jubilee year.

The organisation was presented the medal for its continued efforts in bolstering Indo-Arab relations for the last five decades. Earlier in the year 2015, Vicaruddin received the award ‘Star of Jerusalem’, the highest honour conferred by the Palestine government.

Words ‘Path to Freedom and Independence’ are inscribed along the edge of the medal, while ‘Mahmood Abbas President of the State of Palestine’ is embossed on the centre of it and on the other side the face of Mahmood Abbas is engraved on the medal.

“This gold medal testifies the highest regard the State of Palestine holds for him. President Abbas had sent his greetings to Vicaruddin and saluted his indefatigable spirit and endeavours towards the cause of Palestinian liberation and for his four decades of altruistic, selfless and solemnly humanitarian contributions for the cause of Palestine,” said Palestinian Ambassador, while presenting the Gold Medal.

The Palestinian President in his message appreciated Vicaruddin for his spirit to support Palestine without seeking financial assistance from any Arab and other countries of the world. IALH is credited with coordinating several programmes backing the Palestinian cause across India, ever since its formation in 1967.

It was also instrumental in inviting Late Yasser Arafat, Former chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. The then Union government and the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government supported Arafat’s visit with elaborate security arrangements.

Speaking to The Hans India, Vicaruddin, who is also the Chief in Editor of Rahnuma-e-Deccan Urdu daily, lamented that historically India stood for the Palestinian cause, but Narendra Modi became the first Prime Minister to visit Israel. “Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and even Indira Gandhi stood for Palestinian cause. The current visit of Modi would only do harm to this continued struggle and bolster Israel’s expansion,” he said.
