Hyderabad: In order to increase the strength of teaching staff in the universities, the State government has initiated the exercise of filling the vacancies of assistant professors, associate professors and professors.
In this connection, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Education Kadiyam Srihari held a meeting with the vice-chancellors of universities of the State on Wednesday. At the meeting, issues relating to the filling of vacancies have been discussed.
The meeting also discussed the agitation held by the contract assistant professors demanding regularisation of their services and it has been decided to consider their demands.
The universities were asked to provide the data of contract assistant professors working in their institutions like the number of staff, academic qualifications and expenditure on their salaries. The government wants to fill the vacancies in the universities as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) officials will be visiting the State universities to give accreditation.
Osmania University had lost the accreditation of NAAC four years ago and recently it has applied for the same. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University also applied for the accreditation. NAAC official are likely to visit these universities in next month to examine the infrastructure.
According to officials, as many as 2000 posts are vacant in all the universities and government has accepted in principle to fill 1061 posts. About 450 vacancies would be filled in Osmania University.
In OU, posts of professor have been vacant since long and the departments have been headed by in-charges. These posts have to be filled with associate professors on promotion and also by direct recruitment.
Academicians have been complaining that due to ad-hoc arrangements, teaching standard in the university has been reaching nadir. The issue of appointments in universities was also discussed in the Assembly last year.
President of OU Contract Assistant Professors Association Dr Dhrma Teja said that the universities may regularise their services with the executive council resolution. Services of contract assistant professors have been regularised in the past in the same way, he said.
Sources in the Education Department said that the government has taken stock of the teaching staff strength in the universities and decided to put focus to increase the strength. The ministry may request the universities to take up recruitment process.
As per the rules of the UGC, universities have to appoint their own staff and they may commence the recruitment process soon after getting the formal nod from the government.
