Siddipet: The Grameen Dak Sevaks (GDS) announced an indefinite strike across the country demanding that the Central government regularise their jobs, implement minimum wages and pension as per regular employees in the postal department. The strike would adversely affect the old age and single women pensioners and NREGS workers.

Hundreds of Grameen Dak Sevaks, including delivery assistants, mail carriers and branch post-masters, who are part of All India Grameeen Dak Sevaks Union (AIGDSU) started an indefinite strike in front of Siddipet post office on Wednesday.

GDS have been working in rural areas of India for more than 65 years. Their starting salary has been Rs 4,500 and by the time they retire, they hardly make Rs 10,000 per month. While the branch post-master gets Rs 50 every year as an increment, all others get Rs 30 as increment.

Kamlesh Chandra Committee was constituted by the Centre to study and make recommendations regarding the Dak Sevaks so as to improve their working and living conditions, but even though the committee has submitted its report, the Centre has pushed the issue under carpet for the time being.

“The government asks us to work for three-four every day but, we have been working for 10-12 hours a day. Apart from doing our regular postal duties, we are also responsible for disbursing Centre and State governments’ pension schemes. There is no ESI or PF for us and we work on par with regular employees. So, all we are demanding is to give us equal status and pay us equally for equal work,” said Shankar, Secretary, AIGDSU, Siddipet Sub-division.

Another issue troubling the workers is the targets that are being set for them to promote and register people for Rural Post Life Insurance, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bhima Yojna, Sukanya Samiti (fixed deposit scheme for girl children as part of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme) and increasing recurring deposits in postal department.

There are 370 Dak Sevaks working in Siddipet sub-division, 13,800 working across Telangana and 2,73,000 working across the country. Dak Sevaks in Siddipet sub-division have vowed to intensify their stir until their demands are met.
