Hyderabad: The pathetic condition of the patients continues in Gandhi Hospital in spite of the tall claims by the management that it is equivalent to, if not better than, the corporate hospitals. Not only the patients but the dead are not even spared from the humiliating treatment.
The patients are languishing in hospital verandas and surroundings days together for treatment as the doctors are not available in time. In some cases, doctors skip their duties even as the patients are given appointment to undergo medical treatment.
It may be recalled that ESL Narasimhan, Governor of the two Telugu states, while inaugurating the modern ICU at Gandhi hospital, said, “Gandhi Hospital has become on par with corporate hospitals. Without fear public could visit it for treatment. Even I, too, would come to this hospital."
But the reality is otherwise. Two incidents that happened on Monday could be described as glaring examples of sorry state of affairs in the Gandhi Hospital and reveal the real face of the management.
Chinna, brother-in-law of a patient, Srinivas, a 43-year-old from Warasiguda, told The Hans India, “My brother-in-law was a diabetic patient. Ten days back the doctors removed the toe of left leg. Later, the doctors told him to come again on Friday for amputation of the leg as the infection spread.
He came on Friday. However, he was compelled to sit in the wheelchair for three days as he was not allotted a bed. No one cared about him. He suffered heavy pain during nights.” With the news spreading in the social media, the Gandhi Hospital doctors received order from the peshi of the health minister to take care of the patient. Within an hour, the patient got bed and the leg was amputated.
In another incident, the body of 35-year-old person was left between the emergency ward and maternity ward. The body was half wrapped in a bed sheet. After death of a patient, the nursing staff should remove IV cannula. But the body was left outside with IV cannula, injection on its hands.
Flies were swarming all over the body with some even squirming inside the mouth. No one cared to properly cover the body. But, with the news spreading in social media Gandhi hospital doctors in a hurry shifted the body to mortuary. The Hospital officials said they had already informed the media that the Superintendent was on leave and we were not aware of this. On a tip off, the police have taken a photograph of the body and began inquiry.
