Narayankhed (Sangareddy): Farmers who were given tokens to sell their green gram produce at Narayankhed Agricultural Market were in for a shock on Friday, as the agriculture market committee (AMC) refused to buy their produce citing low quality. Enraged farmers blocked the main road in Narayankhed and held a dharna there, demanding the government to purchase their produce.

According to the marketing committee officials, last year, out of 400 bags which were procured by them and sent to Delhi, 20 bags were returned to them due to low quality. This year, due to frequent rains in Narayankhed area, colour of green gram did not meet the required quality standards set by the Centre. Hence, the officials were reluctant to procure green gram, even though farmers were given tokens to sell their produce on Friday.

Farmers demanded that the market committee should pay them as per the quality and were also ready to settle for a lesser price for low quality produce. It was found that roughly around 70 per cent of the produce was of high quality. Narayankhed MPP Sanjeeva Reddy offered his support to the farmers and demanded that the officials procure the entire produce from the farmers and pay them accordingly.
