Hyderabad: The Congress is gearing up for a showdown with the government over farmers’ issues on the first day of the Assembly monsoon session. The Congress leaders will lead the ‘Chalo Assembly’ rally on Friday from the Gandhi Bhavan to Assembly. The rally is likely to commence at 9:00 am and the party leaders are encouraging farmers to participate in the rally and are ready to face any consequences while taking out the rally.
Speaking about the rally, Congress legislator K Venkat Reddy, who proposed the rally, said the cadre should make the programme a success and added that leaders being arrested before the rally is an atrocious act.
He said the intention of the rally was to put pressure on the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to take steps for the protection of farmers and added that the Chief Minister should come out of Pragathi Bhavan to understand the issues of the farmers.
Commenting on the remarks made by Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao that Congress was disparate, Venkat Reddy wanted to know what the attitude of the government was in the case of farmers.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President N Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government was trying to foil the 'Chalo Assembly' rally to be held on Friday.
Addressing a press conference in Siranpalli village of Navipet mandal in Nizamabad district on Thursday, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the police took many Congress leaders and activists into preventing custody across the State, while others were being intimidated.
He warned the government of dire consequences if it tries to foil an agitation which is being conducted in a democratic manner. He said the Congress had already announced about 'Chalo Assembly' agitation. However, TRS government is using illegal means to sabotage the protest. He demanded that all activists of Congress be released immediately.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said the 'Chalo Assembly' rally would not be a show of strength by Congress, but it would be an expression of protest against the failure of the Chief Minister in honouring the promises that he made on the floor of the House.
He said the agitation was aimed at pressurising the Chief Minister to fulfil the promise of the State government of paying interest that got accumulated on farm loans due to faulty implementation of crop loan waiver scheme.
The TPCC Chief said that of more than 3,500 farmers who committed suicide during the TRS regime, most of them were cotton farmers. He said K Chandrashekar Rao government was refusing to respond to the caution being given by the Congress to help the cotton farmers in the State.
Deputy leader of Congress in the Legislature Council P Sudhakar Reddy said the ruling party leaders were making unnecessary comments on the ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme of the Congress. He alleged that the government is indulging in large-scale arrests all over the State.
