Keep up the glory of Telugu: Allam

Hyderabad: Telangana State Press Academy (TSPA) Chairman Allam Narayana said that the State government is taking all necessary steps to keep up the glory of the Telugu language. However, it is the responsibility of the Telugus to protect their language.

Speaking at a session on the usage of Telugu language in the print and electronic media here at Ravindra Bharathi on Monday, Narayana stressed for an elaborate and comprehensive discussion on the usage of Telugu language in print and electronic media. Besides, the usage of the language in social media like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp.

Narayana said sessions like the one organsied as part of the WTC play an important role in the steps to be taken for the protection of the language. Assuring that the TSPA will contribute its part in the interests of the language, he said that the WTC will have a long-lasting impact on the protection and be securing the interests of the language.

He said that people in the Telugu states speak different dialectic variations of the language. And, pointed out that the language being used currently is a feudal one and expressed his displeasure that the language being used by the lowest sections of society have not yet got its due.

He suggested those in the profession to reflect upon the issue. He also assured that the academy will take the suggestions and advises from the editors and senior journalists to the notice of the government for the betterment of Telugu.

Rajya Sabha MP K Kesava Rao said that newspapers and electronic media reach majority of people and it was only after the formation of the state that the language spoken in Telangana has got its due recognition. He said that the language used in the media should be easy to use, but, at the same time, it should have standards in the language.

Central Information Commissioner Madabhushi Sridhar Acharyulu said that the usage of Telugu language has been coming down with the passing of time. He said that it would not be advisable to make it mandatory for the media to have Telugu. "People are trying hard, but it is time that institutions should contribute for the betterment of the language," he said.

CPRO in the CMO Jwala Narasimha Rao said that there will not be any problem for the Telugu in the future. It is quite natural that changes take place in language. And, asked to welcome the changes brought around by the changing times. He also insisted that there should be a difference between the written and spoken language.

Editor of the Namaste Telangana K Sekhar Reddy stressed that Telugu should be brought into usage of every segment of the administration, he asked how it would be possible to know Telugu unless one reads about the literature.

Andhra Jyothi editor K Srinivas said that the language used in the newspapers has limitations. And, to standardise the language it needed the intervention of the government. He said that language will grow only when it comes to textbooks and newspapers. For making the Telugu as an official language, it should be made as a functional course and said that language is necessary for the survival and identity of people.

Senior journalist Potturi Venkateswara Rao said that there is a growing trend of exchange of words among different regions which is a welcoming sign, he said. Coining of the words, besides bringing some words losing their sheen in the usage. He said that media could achieve such a feat, and when a word is attractive and meaningful it would come into the usage of the people, he added.

Similarly, senior journalist Varadachary stressed that the Media Academy, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University (PSTU), Telugu Academy and department of translations should come together for the development of the language. Later, Allam Narayana facilitated the speakers and the senior journalists Venkateswara Rao and Varadachary.
