Khammam: Police Commissioner Tafseer Iqbal here on Wednesday advised the two-wheeler riders to wear helmets for their own safety. The Police Commissioner was participating in an awareness campaign on “Importance of wearing Helmet,” conducted by the Traffic Police at Pavilion Grounds here.
Speaking on the occasion, Tafseer Iqbal said nearly 413 persons were dying every day in 1,374 road accidents across the country. He stressed the need to take precautions to prevent deaths due to road accidents.
Precious lives were lost every year in accidents. Such accidents can be prevented if the riders of two-wheelers wore helmets and drivers of four-wheelers used seat belts.
He further said the roads accidents happened because the drivers were not following traffic rules. As many as 70 per cent of the accidents proved fatal because head injuries suffered by the victims, he pointed out. He said the Supreme Court had made wearing of helmet mandatory for two-wheeler riders.
Tafseer Iqbal led the rally wearing helmet from Pavilion grounds to DRDA Office through Wyra Road, ZP Centre and NTR bypass road in the city. Additional DCP K Suresh Kumar, ACP (Town) Venkatrao, ACP (Traffic) Sada Niranjan, Circle Inspectors Nageshwar Rao, Chitti Babu, Ramesh and Venkanna Babu were present at the programme.
