Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) celebrated the 72nd Independence Day at its Head Office on Wednesday. The Hans India (THI) in coordination with the GHMC took the opportunity to create awareness against the usage of single-use plastic. THI team distributed free cloth bags to the participants including officials, workers and all the members present at the programme.

The Hans India team distributed over 2,000 cloth bags at four locations including Lanco Hills, My Home Jewel Apartments, SMR Vinay Fountain Head Apartments and Aparna County Villas.The first cloth bag was distributed to Mayor Bonthu Rammohan by Executive Director, The Hans India, K Hanumantha Rao. Further distribution was continued by Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin.

Talking about the campaign, the Mayor said, “Freedom from plastic drive is a good initiative, other agencies should also take up such initiatives and bring change in the society.”GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy said, “Through the campaign ‘freedom from plastic’, The Hans India is distributing cloth bags to the participants and officials.” Lauding the campaign, the Commissioner said everyone should own up responsibility in protecting the environment.

Only then there could be a positive impact on the environment. There should be no gap between a common man and officials while working. “Follow the rules and work accordingly, and things would start working well the way it has to be,” the Commissioner added. The GHMC workers were given appreciation certificates for their exemplary work towards anti-plastic campaign. The certificates were given to Assistant Engineers, sanitary workers and Water Board staff etc. ‘The Hyderabad selfie challenge’ was held at the event where more than 15 people took up the challenge.
