Hyderabad: The city came to a standstill as the sky opened up on Tuesday. A bout of heavy rainfall that started between 4 pm and 5 pm and lasted for an hour-and-a-half was enough to bring the city to its knees. Commuters wading through water logged roads, traffic jams, and stretches ridden with uprooted trees and debris that was left over were common sights across the city.

In Sithafalmandi, people were stranded for close to 30 minutes as the vegetable vendors took shelter under trees resulting in a traffic jam. With the GHMC taking up footpath works, it resulted in debris being left on road sides which also caused inconvenience to commuters. According to the MET department, Mehdipatnam, Malakpet, Chandanagar, Falaknuma, Jubilee Hills and Khairtabad witnessed above 60mm of rainfall. “Thundershowers would occur towards afternoon or evening and would continue until September 15 in Hyderabad,” said weather forecast head K Nagaratna, of India Meteorological Department.

The Telangana State Development and Planning Society live maps showed Asifnagar rain gauge recorded 68 mm of rainfall while the least was observed in Secunderabad. Roads in IT corridor were among the worst the traffic was delayed extra long hours. Water continued to remain stagnant in Begum Bazar while several other areas in Sri Nagar Colony, Kukatpally and Hitech City were inundated. Cellars in Shaikpet wholly submerged in water. State Disaster Response Force (DRF) deployed eight teams for clearing waterlogged roads in Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Begum Bazar, Shaikpet and Kukatpally.
