Hyderabad: The dog menace has returned with a vengeance in Kukatpally. As stray dog numbers keep spiking, residents are literally living in a state of fear. According to estimates, there are close to 65,000 dogs in the area.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) veterinary officer Dr D Ranajit says, “As per guidelines framed by the Animal Welfare Board of India, killing stray dogs is banned in India as per the Animals Act. They are being caught, sterilised, and vaccinated. The dogs are later released after deworming in the same area. If anyone finds unmarked dogs they could register a complaint.” Out of the 65,000 stray dogs, 22,000 have undergone surgery. In the meanwhile, residents have been complaining about howling during night-time and people who return home late at nights are a terrified lot. Raghu, a software employee said, “I dread to walk back home once I get down from the car. Though the distance is a few yards a pack of dogs come charging. It is an everyday ordeal.”

Likewise, a 11-year-old girl Hafsawas refuses to go out and play for fear of being bitten by dogs. Her parents too are worried to even send her to the nearby kirana store. Pawan, a software employee, said, “I face a group of stray dogs chasing me in all the streets of KPHB daily while returning home at night after completing my shift. Many groups of dogs you find in area, they fight with each other make nuisance, one cannot sleep peacefully”. Recently the GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore conducted the meeting with NGOs, resident welfare associations and basti committees to cooperate in the measures being taken to solve stray dog menace in the city.
