BJP seeks Tamilisai Soundararajan's intervention on Telangana Assembly's anti-CAA resolution
he Telangana BJP on Wednesday sought the intervention of State Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to advise Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to call for a special session of the Assembly or a day to withdraw the TS Assembly resolution against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Population Register (NPR).
Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP on Wednesday sought the intervention of State Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to advise Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to call for a special session of the Assembly or a day to withdraw the TS Assembly resolution against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Population Register (NPR).
A party delegation led by former BJP State president Dr K Laxman submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging her to instruct the State government to co-operate to commence the NPR in the State from April 1.
"Besides, advise KCR and all his cabinet colleagues to refrain from spreading misconceptions amongst the people in a manner that spread animosity and hatred."
The party delegation also sought for the governor's intervention for the Chief Minister to tender an unconditional apology for deliberately misleading the people of the State.
Speaking to media after meeting the Governor, Laxman along with BJP MLC N Ramachender Rao, former MP G Vivek, former Ministers DK Aruna and M Narasimhulu and former MLA Ch Ramachandra Reddy alleged that the State government has chosen to flout the constitutional propriety and the spirit of a federal structure for petty polemics.
Laxman said that the TS Assembly has passed a resolution against the CAA and NPR and a non-existent National Register of Citizens (NRC).
"The resolution alleges that the CAA and NPR and the non-existent NRC would tinker with the inclusive and non-religious nature of the citizenship," he added.
Further, the occasion was used by the members and certain political parties and the Chief Minister himself to spread misconceptions and lies on CAA and NPR.
The Chief Minister, in particular, made misleading statements which are potentially incendiary, he said.
The BJP leaders said that the issue of conferring citizenship or rejecting a plea thereof is purely the domain of the Union government under Articles 5 to 11 of the Indian Constitution. Neither the State governments nor the assemblies have any mandate here.
Laxman said that the party considers any attempt to undermine the power of the Union government or an Act of Parliament tantamount to challenging the collective will of the people of the nation and subvert the provisions of the constitution.
They said the resolution is a blatant attempt to encroach into a constitutional domain, where it has no mandate. The BJP leaders sought the intervention of the Governor to protect the constitution and ensure that the attempts of the vested interests to orchestrate animosity amongst the communities are repulsed.
