Congress pays tributes to Rajiv Gandhi in Hanamkonda
The Congress leaders on Tuesday paid their tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary.
Hanamkonda: The Congress leaders on Tuesday paid their tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary. Speaking on the occasion, District Congress Committee (DCC) President Naini Rajender Reddy said that Rajiv, who worked to make India a formidable force in the world, will be remembered forever.
"Rajiv, who focused on technology and education, brought in a remarkable change in the country. He envisioned making India on par with the developed countries. It was due to his efforts Information Technology (IT) was flourishing in the country," Reddy said, referring to the reforms introduced during the regime of former PM. He said that Rajiv Gandhi also revolutionised telecom services so that every Indian could avail it.
He said that Rajiv Gandhi had introduced three-tier Panchayat Raj system to strengthen the administration in the country. "Rajiv Gandhi gave the right to vote at 18 years of age. It not only encouraged young people to take part in politics but also created political awareness among them," Reddy said. Rajiv Gandhi, who became Prime Minister of the largest democratic nation at the age of 40 years, stood like a beacon to others. The Congress leaders organised blood donation camp on the occasion.
It may be mentioned here that Rajiv Gandhi, who served as the seventh PM of the country between 1984 and 1989 was born on August 20, 1944. Incidentally, he was the last member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to hold the highest post in the country. He was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the LTTE while campaigning for the elections at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
