Despite high demand, power utilities supply uninterrupted electricity to all

Hyderabad: Round-the-clock power supply for agriculture, lift irrigation schemes, rapid urbanisation, fast-pace industrial development and growing use of luxury electronic appliances has resulted in spiralling demand for power in Telangana. The power demand on Friday registered an all-time high at 13,168 MW.

Such huge demand is a record of sorts for even in the united Andhra Pradesh, the demand never touched this figure. The demand in Telangana State last year this day was only 9,770 MW. As summer temperatures shoot up the demand could go up further.

TS Transco and Genco Chairman and Managing Director D Prabhakara Rao said that power demand registered an all-time high and along with it the highest per capita power consumption was also recorded. This, he said, was another record in the Telangana State.

The plus point of Telangana is that despite such a high demand, the power utilities have been supplying uninterrupted power to meet the requirements of all sections.

The per capita power consumption in India was 1,181units while in Telangana, it is1,896 units.

The average per capita consumption at the time of formation of state was 1,356 units and it is increased by 39.82 per cent in six years. Similarly, the increase of power connections in the farm sector, and requirement of power for lift irrigation schemes after the construction of Kaleshwaram project increased the energy demand.

There has been increase in industrial sectors, business and commercial connections have also increased due to the rapid urbanisation. With this there is the highest growth rate for the new connections all over the State.

The total power connection when the Telangana State was formed was 1,11,19,990 and it has been increased to 1,54,14,451 this year, registering 38.61 per cent growth in the power connections.

The captive power generation was also increased to 16,246 MW from 7,778 MWs at the formation of the State.
