Onion price hike brings tears to both farmers, consumers in Nizamabad

Nizamabad: The onion prices are going to make the people cry once again, with a steep rise in prices. Onion rates were priced between Rs 10 to Rs 14 till the end of May. But in the second week of June the rates have been growing slowly and continued to increase day-by-day.

As on Thursday, the price of one kg onions in Nizamabad city was Rs 26. In Karimnagar, Kamareddy, Jagtial, Peddapalli and Sircilla districts, the onions price is Rs 100 per three kgs. The prices vary depending on the market and location. Market experts predicted that the price will increase to Rs 50 per kg in the coming days.

Here the sad thing is that onions bring tears both to farmers and consumers, as the farmers get meagre amount and consumers have to pay high prices. Only brokers are happy by making more money with the increasing prices of onions. Onion prices are expected to cross Rs 50 per kg milestone in the first weeks of August and as per sources, the price may vary from Rs 50 to Rs 100 by the end of August.

With prices touching the sky, it is best for the people to buy onions in bulk and store them.

People are complaining that it is the duty of the government to keep an eye on the changes in onion prices on a regular basis. Also, it should review the supply of onion before the prices go up.

For the common people, who are already struggling with the rising vegetable prices, the onion price is going to become a burden.

Onions will be cultivated mainly in Dichpally, Jakranpally and Dharpally mandals in Nizamabad district. Also, it will be imported from Maharashtra and other parts of the country.

Local produce is sufficient to meet the demand from January to April. For the rest of the year, retail traders procure onions from other parts of the country while wholesale traders will buy large quantities of onions from Nasik in Maharashtra.
