Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress would take up membership drive in the first two months of the next year as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting has taken a decision in this regard.

Leaders, who have attended the AICC meeting, held on Saturday at Delhi told The Hans India that the membership campaign has been discussed in the meeting and it has been decided to take it up in January and February. They said that the schedule of the drive would be informed soon.

The Congress wanted to take up the membership campaign next year as the municipal elections may be held at any time in the State.

The Congress took up membership drive in 2017 all over the country and it has been decided to hold the fresh round in second half of this year.

But due to the elections in Maharashtra and other States, the programme was postponed.

This time, the party wants to hold the membership drive without papers. It means that the names of the people, who enrolled as members would be stored in the computers. A database with the information of the members would also be maintained and a mobile app may be used for the membership drive.

The party wants to ensure that members are enrolled properly in the ensuing drive. In the past, the leaders used to take the membership books, fill them at home and submit to the party offices.

They used to pay the membership fee from their pockets and claim enrolment of thousands. Even names of other party supporters used to figure in the members list.

It is also decided at the high command level not to give active membership in the fresh drive. All the members would be ordinary members and there would be no special status to any member.

The BJP held the membership drive with much fanfare in the State. The Congress wants to show its popularity among the people with the help of membership drive. It wants to enrol more than 40 lakh members.

Party leaders feel that proper enrolment would also reveal the ground reality. After the completion of the membership drive, booth level committees would be appointed.
