Warangal: Call to protect biodiversity

Warangal: Biological diversity supports food security, dietary health and livelihood sustainability, Chief Conservator of Forests, Warangal Circle, MJ Akbar said, speaking at a programme organised by the Rural district forest department on the occasion of 'International Day for Biological Diversity' at Pakhal on Wednesday. The theme for this year is 'Our Biodiversity, Our Food, and Our Health'.

"The younger generation is already facing the ill-effects due to loss of biodiversity. The malady can be checked only if people come forward owns the responsibility of protecting the ecosystem that is fast falling apart," Akbar said. He said that quality of the water, air and the food is invariably depend on biological diversity.

Warangal Rural DFO K Purushotham emphasised the need for imparting environmental education to people so that to inculcate eco-friendly practices such as minimising use of plastics. The Indian Cheetah is seen no more in the country. The Pakhal Wildlife sanctuary once a habitat for tigers is no more a host for them. He said that presence of tiger indicates a complete availability of resources in a forest habitat.

Earlier, a 10-km cycle ride was conducted from Narsampet to Pakhal Lake. Students and nature lovers also took part in forest walk organised by the Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary.
