Warangal: The Warangal Urban District Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil said that road accidents can have devastating effects not only on the victims, but also on their families.

Speaking at a meeting on 'Road Safety' at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, he emphasised the need for identifying accident black spots on the roads.

"Within 10 days, officials concerned have to identify the accident-prone areas that account large number of mishaps and take measures such as setting up stoppers, road signs, caution boards etc," the Collector said.

He also emphasised the need for putting up speed breakers wherever required especially at intersections, school/college zones.

Road safety is not just the responsibility of the traffic wing alone, it needs coordination among various departments, he said, directing the transport officials to thoroughly check the fitness of around 1,000 school buses plying in the Urban district. The transport officials informed that they have so far seized 30 school buses.

The Collector told the officials to ensure CCTV cameras in all school buses as per the orders of Supreme Court. Patil said that efforts are on modernise 13 junctions in the city so that to ease the traffic.

Commissioner of Police V Ravinder said that they have identified 30 black spots in the Commissionerate limits spread across Warangal Urban, Rural and Jangaon districts.

He informed that as many as 111 persons died and 415 sustained injuries in 375 road accidents in 2018. Transport deputy commissioner P Purushotham, Greater Warangal municipal commissioner N Ravi Kiran, National Highways Authority EE Srinivas, R&B EE Rajam, RTC regional manager Ramulu, ACP Md Mazid, DM&HO Dr Harish Raj, MGM superintendent Dr B Srinivas Rao were among others present.
