Chirala: Chirala district Joint Action Committee demanded that the government make Chirala the district headquarters and name it after freedom fighter Duggirala Gopala Krishnaiah.
Chirala district JAC convener Tadivalasa Devaraj said that the Chirala town has all facilities that are required to be the headquarters of a district. He said that as the news is out that the government is reorganising the districts in the state and is making each parliament constituency as a district, they are demanding it to make Chirala as the district headquarters instead of Bapatla.
He said that Bapatla has no infrastructure and facilities for being a district headquarters but Chirala is content with buildings for government offices, hospital facilities, hotels, transport, educational institutions, business establishments and industrial prominence.
He quoted that Chirala town is famous as Mini Mumbai, for its business and availability of varieties in handlooms, cashew market, etc and about 10,000 people visit the town only to purchase the textiles. He opined that making Bapatla as the district headquarters will boost nothing more but real estate business.
Other members of JAC also opined that the government should consider naming the new district after the freedom fighter Duggirala Gopala Krishnaiah, who is behind the Chirala- Perala movement against the British.
The JAC members announced that they are meeting the local political leaders, intellectuals, and employee associations to seek their support for the district headquarters and to bring pressure on the politicians to convince the government in favour of Chirala.
