Tirupati: The mercury level which was wavering above 40 degree Celsius in the pilgrim city fell down sharply to 31 degree Celsius on Tuesday bringing the much-needed respite to the denizens from scorching heat, thanks to heavy rains last night (Monday).

The downpour which lasted for an hour resulted in many low-lying areas including residential localities, roads and rail under bridge (RUB) leading to the southern part of the city hampering vehicular traffic. The water in the RUB remains not pumped out till noon affecting vehicular traffic in the main area.

Power supply which was also disrupted in most of the areas in the city due to the heavy rain was restored after several hours but many localities remain without power till morning. Rains were reported in many mandals in the district.

Meanwhile, officials of the Meteorological department predicted the rains to continue till Wednesday in the district which recorded an average rainfall of 5.5 mm on Tuesday (recorded at 8 am).
