5 new med colleges in pipeline for Telangana State, In what could be called a major boost to medical education in Telangana State, the government is planning to establish five new medical colleges.
- To be set up in Khammam, Nalgonda, Medak, Karimnagar and Mahabubnagar districts

Hyderabad: In what could be called a major boost to medical education in Telangana State, the government is planning to establish five new medical colleges.
These medical colleges will reportedly come up in a span of three years. The government will appoint a new board with members who will be looking into the establishment of colleges. The board will also coordinate with the Medical Council of India (MCI) for hassle free process during the approvals.
According to sources in the directorate of medical education, the government plans to make the proposal in such a way that five colleges would get approval from the MCI in a span of three years, as MCI doesn’t give permission to all the colleges at a single go.
The proposals for these new colleges are reported to be ready and are awaiting a clearance from the finance department. Sources say that the project would take off once the proposal gets a clearance. The proposed medical colleges would come up in Nalgonda, Medak, Khammam, Mahabubnagar and Karimnagar districts. It is estimated that initially each college would require funds up to Rs 400 crore.
Sources revealed that a detailed project report with land allotments, procurement of funds and infrastructure would be handed over to the MCI once the state finance department gives its nod.
The government is of the view that establishing medical colleges will help medical education fan out to more number of students in Telangana State.
As of now, there are five government medical colleges in the State i.e. Osmania Medical College, Gandhi Medical College, Kakatiya Medical College, Government Medical College, Nizamabad and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Adilabad.
It is learnt that the new colleges would be functional with 100-150 seats. As of now, a total of 850 seats are available in the government medical colleges, 1,700 in private, 400 seats in minority colleges.
It may be noted that MCI did not give permission for starting up new colleges due to lack of required infrastructure and refused to increase seats in a few private medical colleges in the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states this year. It only gave a conditional permission for the government run colleges. Now there lingers a doubt whether MCI would grant permission for new colleges with proposed number (100-150) of seats by the government.
