Hyderabad: As part of awareness campaign for the proposed world’s tallest statue (182 metre) of former home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, set to come up near Narmada dam in Gujarat State, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust of Gujarat is organising ‘run for unity’, a 2-km run at 565 different locations including Hyderabad in the country.
For Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the run will mark the first milestone of his dream project to build a giant statue of Patel, India's Iron Man, and its first home minister. In the process, the drive is also expected to strengthen Modi's projection as a national leader.
‘Run for unity’ in Hyd today
The city organisers have asked the participants to assemble at people’s plaza near Necklace Road by 7 am. Narendra Modi is scheduled to give a brief speech before flaging-off the ‘run for unity’ in Vadodara between 7.40 am and 8 am.
Around the same time, former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman would waive a green flag to kick-start the run in the State capital. BJP leaders said that celebrities and noted personalities from different walks of life besides Arjuna and Padma awardees would take part in the programme. After the conclusion of this run, unity march, a walkathon event would be held for seniors and elders.
More than 10 lakh people are expected to run simultaneously at more than 565 locations in India. In Andhra Pradesh, this programme is being organised in 170 municipalities across the State. It would be followed by a special drive (from December 15 till mid-February) across the country to collect iron scrap that would be used in the construction of the statue.
