First year students get second year paper

Parents seek action against Controller of Examinations
Visakhapatnam: The erratic question papers given to B Tech Mechanical Engineering students appearing for the second year’s first semester examinations conducted by Andhra University early this fortnight has agonised every one of them, including the meritorious.
Enquiries revealed that of the total of eight questions in the Thermodynamics-1 question paper held on December 28, four are considered to be out of syllabus, with one not even visible.
Disappointed candidates in some centres complained about this to the invigilators, who in turn, conveyed it to the varsity’s higher authorities.
University officials, after preliminary verification, said that questions pertaining to Thermodynamics-2 were given in the Thermodynamics paper-1. They made a vain bid to hush it up by assuring to give additional marks to those wrote the examination. However, the complaints have exposed the faux pas.
Further, it was also revealed that the private organisation, which was looking after the printing of question papers, had failed to supply the required number and reportedly delivered sealed bundles to the varsity.
The authorities are now planning to blacklist the teacher who had set the question paper and also to initiate action against the printing agency.
Meanwhile, there was another bloomer in the question paper of `Machine Drawing’ given to the candidates of same engineering stream.
Several students found it difficult to understand the question itself, which contained insufficient data. As one of the questions carried 25 marks, a majority of students attempted to solve that in view of the marks.
Contrary to expectation, the examinees were disappointed a lot with the lack of data given to draw the diagram and informed to the invigilators who again alerted the varsity authorities.
Irked by the repeated incidents, the varsity think tank swung into action and sent new set of question papers with a detailed data to all colleges which reached the students just half an hour before the closure of the exam. Though many students sought extra time from the invigilator, they were given mere thirty minutes.
This upset many students who appealed to the university authorities to render justice by taking all necessary steps well before the conduct of the exams and ensure such mistakes do not recur.
Many parents also demanded action against the Controller of Examinations and held him responsible for goof-up.
When contacted on Wednesday, Principal of the Engineering College, Prof Ch Ramachandra Murty, feigned ignorance and dismissed them as baseless allegations.
He evaded a direct reply by stating ‘I just returned from Mumbai today and anyhow I will look into it’.
