Hyderabad: The tussle between Telangana and the Andhra Pradesh governments over release of water to Krishna delta for drinking purposes remains unresolved. Even the intervention of the Central Water Commission (CWC) has not succeeded in bringing about an agreement between the two sides.

CWC chairman A B Pandya, along with Mahendran, a member of the committee, specially flew down here on Tuesday to hold discussions with both governments. They suggested that 6 tmcft water should be released by the Telangana government.

However, the Telangana government has agreed to release 3.5 tmcft only. Informing the CWC about the government’s decision, Principal Secretary (Irrigation) B Aravinda Reddy requested him to set up a national body to evolve a proper mechanism with the officials of CWC to ensure that the water is used for drinking purposes only. The CWC team first met Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma at Secretariat. It is learnt that Rajiv Sharma pointed out that his government was ready to release 2 tmcft of water to meet drinking water needs of Krishna and Guntur districts in the delta region. Nagarjuna Sagar is left with 13 tmcft at present. If the demand of AP government for 10 tmcft was conceded, it would have a severe impact on the drinking water needs of Nalgonda and Hyderabad districts in case rains fail this year.

However, AP Chief Secretary I Y R Krishna Rao said that 2 tmcft supply would not serve the purpose as it would not even reach the Pulichintala project. After hearing the contention of both the sides, the CWC proposed that T government release 6 tmcft to Krishna Delta. The Andhra Pradesh government is understood to have reiterated that 3.5 tmcft would not be sufficient to meet the requirements of the Krishna Delta people. AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who would be going to New Delhi on Thursday is likely to take up the issue with the central government.
