8 AP pilgrims die in Maha mishap

Hyderabad: Eight devotees from Andhra Pradesh were killed and 15 others injured when a private bus fell into a river near Sholapur district of Maharashtra on Tuesday. The dead include six women.

The mishap took place during the wee hours of Tuesday. All the victims belong to Machilipatnam town of Krishna district and were returning from a pilgrimage at Shirdi and were proceeding towards Pandaripuram in Maharashtra. The bus was carrying 51 passengers according to Assistant Police Inspector Chormule. They had left Machilipatnam on September 29.


Though the cause of accident is yet to be ascertained some passengers claimed that the driver felt sleepy. Though they suggested that he stop the bus and take some rest, he did not listen to them. The bus belongs to Gayatri Travels.

The deceased were identified as Ch Panduranga Rao (60), M Jaganmohan Rao (57), Lakshmi (45), P Lakshmi (55), N.Lakshmi Kumari (50), Ch Seshumani (45), G Venkateswaramma (45) and Reshma (20). The injured were shifted to local hospital in Sholapur.

AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the accident and directed the officials to launch relief operations in coordination with their Maharashtra counterparts. He also directed the Chief Secretary to arrange a special aircraft to bring bodies and the injured back to the state. A special aircraft left Sholapur at 5.30 pm carrying eight bodies and 30 injured passengers and reached Gannavaram airport at 6.30 pm. The bodies were then sent to Machilipatnam by ambulances to their respective places.
