Hyderabad: Demanding special status to Andhra Pradesh, the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The APCC urged the centre to ensure that all the provisions in the AP Reorganisation Act for the development of the State were honoured. It also recalled that the BJP had made several promises in its election manifesto and it was now incumbent upon it to implement them.

  • Describes Centre’s grants to State as only eyewash
  • Stresses need to implement all promises incorporated in State Reorganisation Act

APCC President N Raghuveera Reddy in the memorandum said in accordance with the Act, the then Congress led UPA promised to accord special status, funds for the backward regions development and Centre’s aide to bridge the financial deficit. The BJP, as a main opposition party when the bifurcation bill came up for debate in Rajya Sabha, also demanded that the special status be given to AP for a period of 10 years and not five as mentioned in the Act.

In reality, in the nine month rule, not a single step has been taken to turn those promises into reality. The recently announced paltry amount of Rs 500 crore as financial assistance and a mere Rs 350 crore package for the seven backward districts was nothing but eyewash, he said and also pointed out that even during the election campaign, Modi promised that BJP would implement all the promises.

Allocation of Rs 10,000 crore for Polavaram project in 2015-16 budget, financial incentives for industries , financial support for the new capital, up-grading of airports, establishment of new railway zones, and metro rail in Visakhapatnam and between Vijayawada – Guntur and establishment of steel factory in YSR Kadapa districts were among other demands figured in the memorandum.
