A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect has been signed between the representatives of the State government and United Nations Women Office for India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, here on Tuesday.

According to UN Women in India Office, deputy representative Patricia Barandun the project intends to empower women by creating awareness among them to take active part in the policy and decision making in the governance.

“For this, the UN Women would bring, the much needed knowledge and resources to devise appropriate interventions to help out the Andhra Pradesh Institute of Rural Development (APSIRD), which would implement the project,” she added.

The project with a multi-sectoral approach is intended to enhance gender responsive governance in the agency areas of Visakhapatnam district, which has the highest tribal population in the State. Besides, Srikakulam district was also chosen to implement the project as it figures lowest on the Human Development Index (HDI).

Of the six states chosen to roll out the project Andhra Pradesh was the first one to sign an MoU with the UN Women. The other states in which the project would be implemented are Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha she added.

Explaining the plan of action, APSIRD, deputy director Abdul Haleem said that project would be implemented in 243 panchayat's in 12 mandals in Visakhapatnam agency areas on the basis of the issues figured out in the area and methodologies evolved to address and empower women to take a proactive role in the governance.

“To achieve the target, it was not only women, but also men would be made stake holders in achieving the objective. A state-level work shop would be organised to provide training before rolling out the project,” he said.

UNWomen representative Arunima Sen, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development deputy secretary K Venkata Krishna, additional commissioner and APSIRD joint director V Ranga and other senior officials were present during the signing of MOU.
