Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu along with Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu and Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju laid the foundation stone for extension and strengthening of existing runway and allied works at Madhurapudi Airport here on Monday.

Later, the Chief Minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airports Authority of India chairman Guruprasad Mahopatra, Civil Aviation Secretary R S Chowbay and other senior officials on Regional Air Connectivity (RAC) which will benefit air passengers to travel within the State at low fares.
Speaking at a public meeting, Naidu said 857 acres was handed over to Civil Aviation Department by paying nearly Rs 300 crore compensation to farmers. He said AP was the only State in the country having five airports one each at Visakhapatnam, Madhurapudi, Vijayawada, Tirupati and Kadapa and four to five more airports were coming up at Bhogapuram, Oravakal, Dagadartri and Donakonda, for which permission from the Centre was awaited.
He said Madhurapudi Airport would be made international airport in next one or two years. The Chief Minister reminded that they had already given 700 acres at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore to Gannavaram Airport and ready to give 500 acres more through land pooling for expansion.
The Chief Minister said that on the same lines, the State government had given 703 acres land to Tirupati Airport at a cost of Rs 250 crores and 3,000 acres to Bhogapuram Airport. He said that the State government was committed to develop not only air, but also ports in State as another port was going to come at Kakinada apart from four more in the 974 km long coastal belt. Also Buckingham canal was being modernised for inland navigation.
He said that railway cargo clusters and SEZs would be developed. While emphasising the need for friendly relations with the Centre, he made it clear that there would be no compromise in fighting for the rights of the State. Venkaiah Naidu, in his speech, said that the Centre was committed to develop the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh and extending help to the tune of Rs 2.25 lakh crore. He explained that HPCL is going invest Rs 52,000 crore and Rs 64,000 crore are going to be spent on national highways and several defense projects worth of Rs 6,600 crore were coming in the State.
Venkaiah said that s naval base would be coming up at Bobbili in Vizianagaram district at a cost of Rs 3,600 crore. He further said that Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is going to be expanded at a cost of Rs 35,000 crore through which employment would be provided in large scale. Union minister for civil aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju thanked the State government for giving land for the extension of the airport. Ministers Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao were present on the occasion.
