Telangana, AP get 7 days more for Eamcet counselling

​New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to extend the Eamcet counselling deadline to October 7 for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for counselling to fill the medical seats in various medical colleges.

A bench comprising Justice Anil R Dave, Justice L Nageswar Rao and Justice Lalit heard the arguments in this regard of the state governments and those of the private medical college managements and the MCI and extended the deadline from September 30 to October 7 to help the states to complete the process.

Counsel for TS Mukul Rohatgi argued that as the Eamcet paper got leaked, the government was forced to hold Eamcet-3 which had resulted in the delay.

Only first round of counselling could be completed, he said pleading for 15 days time over and above the deadline.

Counsel for AP Rajgopal argued that as AP too would be affected due the admission provisions under the clause 371 D which stipulated that 15 per cent seats were to be filled with non-locals (which it needs to share with TS) his client too needed a similar extension. Counsel for the managements of the private colleges Ramesh Allanki too argued on similar lines.

The Medical Council of India, however, opposed the petitions seeking the extension as it might lead to similar demands from the other states too.

In view of the piquant situation arising out of the paper leak and the problem of Telugu students, the bench agreed to give a week's extension.
