The old building was inaugurated in 1927 when Bezawada, the former name of Vijayawada, was a small municipality. As it is located very near to the railway station, a large number of people used to come to attend functions by trains, buses and other vehicles.Earlier, a philanthropist Shah Zahoor constructed the Musafir Khana for the tourists who visit the city. The pilgrims used to stay on payment of nominal rent. Gradually, the ground portion was given on rent to run the shops.
During the last 30 years, the Musafir Khana was renovated and roof top was erected front side and back side of the building. New room was constructed for cooking. Since, nominal charges are collected for marriages and functions, a large number of poor and middle class families used the Musafir Khana for performing marriages and receptions (Nikha and Valima).
Shaik Jameel, a resident of Vijayawada, said he has a very long association with Musafir Khana since he had attended more than 200 marriages during the last 50 years. Elderly people and middle aged people of Wynchpet, Islam pet, Kotha Peta, Arundel pet and other parts of Vijayawada have very sweet memories and bond with the old building since their marriages were performed there.
Now, the Telugu Desam government granted funds for construction of Haj House, Shadi Khana and 20 shops in the place of Musafir Khana. Vijayawada West MLA Jaleel Khan requested the Chief Minister to sanction funds to give a facelift to the Musafir Khana. Some workers are busy demolishing the old structure. Md Asadulla, who got married at the Shah Zahoor Musafir Khana said though the old structure may vanish, but his memories of his marriage at the venue would remain forever.
Nawab Jani, manager of the Musafir Khana, said the 80-year-old structure is very strong and can last some more years due to strong base and quality of work. He is worried about his future as he may, or may not get the job after the construction of new building. Six other workers, who were dependent upon the Musafir Khana for their livelihood, are expressing similar views.
