Vijayawada: Employees of Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) are strongly opposing the proposal for transfer of department’s 4.50 acres land in Gunadala for construction of a hotel by the Government. So far, the SPDCL doesn’t have its own building to run the office.
Highlights:
- The SPDCL SC, CE offices are functioning in irrigation department buildings
- Transco has no own building to run district, zonal offices in Vijayawada
- Erstwhile APSEB lost more than 50 acres of its land to encroachments
The office of the Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Divisional offices of the SPDCL are located in the building owned by Irrigation department in Suryarao Pet for five decades. The lease period between the Transco and Irrigation department reportedly ended a few years ago. Consequently, the electricity staff has to vacate the building if the irrigation department insists on it.
A senior official working in SPDCL in Suryarao Pet said ‘We don’t have office or place to move if the irrigation department insists for the vacation of the Transco office’. He said the SPDCL has been planning for a long time for construction of its own building in Gunadala in 4.50 acres land.
However, there are reports that the State Government is planning to transfer the 4.50 acres land to other department for construction of a star hotel on the pretext of promoting tourism. The erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (APSECB) had owned more than 70 acres land in Gunadala. The land was used for storage of heavy materials, wires, poles, transformers, feeders etc. Besides, construction of materials was also continued many decades.
Due to negligence of the department and other reasons, more than 50 acres land has been encroached for many decades. Now, the total area restricted to less than 30 acres and demand for land in the city has been increased due to bifurcation of the State.
In this backdrop, Vidyut Saudha building was constructed recently in Gunadala area after bifurcation of the state. There is huge demand for the land for parking of vehicles, setting up repairing units and stores material. The Transco has been using 4.50 acres land for repairing the transformers and producing cement pillars, which are used for laying the electricity live wires. If the Government gives the 4.50 acres land for construction of a hotel, the transformers repairing section has to be shifted to other location in the outskirts of the city to other town, said a senior officer.
He said the Transco would suffer huge loss if the department land is allocated to other department for construction of a star hotel in Gunadala. Left parties and the Congress strongly opposed the transfer of SPDCL land to other department for construction of a star hotel. The employees are strongly opposing the construction of a hotel in the land owned by SPDCL and planning to launch agitation to protect their 4.50 acres land.Congress party official spokes person Kolanukonda Sivaji has said the Government can give the land for construction hotels in Amaravati where the Government has 40,000 acres land what was the need to give Government land for construction of star hotels in Vijayawada city.
