A IIIT first year girl student D Ramadevi, 16, died in mysterious circumstances on Saturday morning in IIIT Nuzvid campus. Other students believe that Ramadevi had committed suicide due to illness while the college management says the girl has been suffering from various ailments and died of injuries after accidentally falling on the hostel steps.
Vijayawada: A IIIT first year girl student D Ramadevi, 16, died in mysterious circumstances on Saturday morning in IIIT Nuzvid campus. Other students believe that Ramadevi had committed suicide due to illness while the college management says the girl has been suffering from various ailments and died of injuries after accidentally falling on the hostel steps.
This is the second death in the campus in the last four days. Earlier, a first- year student SagireddyPoorna Lakshmi Narasimha Murthy, 16, committed suicide due to personal reasons by hanging to the ceiling fan in the hostel room on Wednesday night. Students of the IIIT, Nuzvid were shocked with the death of two students in four days. According to information D Ramadevi has been suffering from anemia and other ailments found with grievous injuries on Saturday morning on the steps of the hostel.
Staff and other students noticed injured Ramadevi and immediately shifted to the local government hospital and later to a corporate hospital in Vijayawada. However, she died at the private hospital while undergoing treatment. Later, the body was shifted to the Government General Hospital for postmortem in Vijayawada.
D Ramadevi hails from Vandanapeta village of Srikakulam district and been studying first year in the campus. Other students suspect the girl committed suicide by jumping from the terrace. She sustained grievous injuries at ribs and chest. But, the IIIT director V Venkata Dasu said the girl has been suffering from anaemia and other ailments and felt she could have fell on the steps due to illness and died of injuries.
Student unions are alleging that IIIT management should be held responsible for the death of two students in the gap of only four days. Earlier, IIIT Nuzvid was in eye of the storm for ragging incident, in which some were expelled and some others were suspended.
Nuzvid DSP V Srinivasa Rao and Nuzvid Town circle inspector Ram Kumar visited the campus and began probe on the death of Ramadevi.The police are trying to find the reasons for the death of the student and collecting information from other students and roommates.
The mysterious death occurred when the HRD Minister GantaSrinivasa Rao decided to hold a meeting in Vijayawada onOctober 16 and constitute a committee to study the deaths of students in the educational institutions.
Meanwhile, Nuzvid TDP leader Muddaraboina Venkateswara Rao visited the campus and held discussions with the Director V VDasu. He alleged the management is not taking measures to check the deaths and ragging in the campus. Heated argument was taken place between the Director and the TDP leader. SFI and other students union staged protests in the IIITon Saturday over the death of Ramadevi.
Her parents had not reached Vijayawada GGH by evening and expected to reach by 9 p.m. The body would be handed over to the parentsonly on Sunday morning. The GGH will function only half day on Sunday.
