Nellore: Residents of the Nellore, who are facing difficulties with damaged roads due to ongoing works, can heave sigh of relief as the state government had accorded administrative sanction for laying roads in the city.

Apart from city, all urban local bodies such as Sullurpeta, Naidupeta, Venkatagiri, Atmakur and Kavali will also be getting funds for laying roads besides development of other infrastructure facilities under the Critical Infrastructure Investment Plan (CIIP). Majority roads were dug as part of ongoing underground drainage and water networks in the city limits.

Now, the contractors and the civic authorities are planning to lay 900 km roads in Corporation limits with Rs 800 crore. Roads were damaged as municipal and public health wings have taken up underground drainage and water works at a cost of Rs 1,100 crore.

Drainage and water supply channels have been dug on newly laying roads. With the funds provided for the two projects, there is a possibility of laying only 425 km roads as against the requirement of 560 km in the city limits. MEIL and L&T have been entrusted with the task of laying roads and there has been a serious lackadaisical attitude on the part of implementing agencies that was creating troubles in many localities.

The CIIP covers not only roads but also sewerage and septage management, storm water drainage, burial grounds, parks, system improvement plan and other needs. Rs 12,600 crore have been allocated for all 110 municipal bodies across the state.

The estimated cost for the district is around 1,350 crores, according to civic officials. The funding of around 90 per cent is a bank loan and the state government attaches 10 per cent of equity share for completing the project. Rs 4,037 crore were allocated for roads and resurfacing in all civic bodies across the state.

A senior official from the Corporation said this would be a boon for the district for developing critical infrastructure. All urban local bodies will get facelift with the funds being provided by the state government.
