The Maruti Vitara Brezza which is on display at the 2016 Auto Expo is the first product to be developed with the automaker’s Indian engineers taking the lead role. Moving ahead, at least 3-4 models out of the 15 new products that are earmarked for the country by 2020 will adopt a similar product development strategy.

According to Times Of India’s sources, the Indian subsidiary will be given more responsibility in coming up with products that are tailor-made for the local market while parent Suzuki focuses of developing high-end technologies.

It’s to be noted that final decisions regarding MSIL’s role in R&D are not made yet. The details of the products in question are not available as of now but the Indian R&D division would work on Suzuki platforms and engines rather than creating a product from scratch. Like in the development of the Vitara Brezza, focus will be on imparting key values and tastes to suit the Indian customers.

The 15 new products for India in the next five years (including 2016) would spread across three major platforms and have a combined investment of USD 1 billion. The products that are to be developed by Maruti Suzuki in India would have very high local content.
