Hyderabad: The aphorism ‘less is more’ aptly sums up the state of bus shelters in the city. If there is a roof, there are no seats and vice-versa. There are 1,142 bus shelters in the city of which 70 per cent are damaged and in pitiable condition forcing commuters to stand in the open while 1,200 bus stands have no shelters at all. About 25 lakh commuters depend on public transportation in the GHMC limits.

As per norms, bus shelters are required to have comfortable seating and proper illumination besides a provision for allowing electronic streaming of bus timings and routes. Sharing his experience, K Sharath, a clerk with a private firm, said, “The bus shelter near Ranga Reddy Collectorate is in a very poor condition. I don’t know why it is called a bus shelter when there is no shelter and seating.”
