Tirumala: Gold-plating of the Swarna Ratham began at SV Museum in Tirumala on Monday, with TTD Executive Officer M G Gopal and Tirumala Jt. EO K S Srinivas Raju performing special puja to the chariot and related objects. Later, the TTD EO told media persons that the chariot was expected to be ready for the upcoming Brahmotsavams. Over 73 kgs of gold and 2,900 kgs of copper would be used for gilding the chariot. The works would be completed in 25 days.The total value of the 30-feet chariot would be around Rs 25 crores, he said. The JEO K S Srinivas Raju said that tight security arrangements had been made in the work zone.

He said a trial run of the gilded chariot would be conducted in the last week of September. Project contractor S A T Menon from Palakkad, Kerala, said that over 16 craftsmen, hailing from Kumbakonam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu, were engaged to execute the massive project. "They all have an experience of over 40 years in this profession", he added. Additional FACAO O Balaji, Additional CVSO Sivakumar Reddy, SEs Sudhakar Rao and Ramesh Reddy, Deputy EO Temple C Ramana and others were also present.
