Last week actor Kamal Haasan rued that “Trouble and controversies keep following me and will continue for the remainder of my career.” If his latest offering ‘Uttama Villain’ was already not mired in controversies, another dilemma hit the 60-year-old actor on Friday moments before the scheduled release of his film.
Theatre owners cancelled the morning show of ‘Uttama Villain’ citing financial issues between producers Thirrupathi Brothers and financiers Eros International.
Many hoped that the movie will be released later in the day but the stalemate lingered on. “I feel extremely sorry for the fans. The movie can release at any moment but I can’t specify the time. The film has been screened abroad and I wanted to watch the movie along with Kamal’s fans in my hometown Bengaluru on Friday but I was disappointed. Even though the issues have been raised by financers in Tamil, the movie can’t be released in other languages due to a clause by Eros International,” said director Ramesh Aravind.
A screening for media personnel too at Prasad Labs was cancelled at the eleventh hour. Not just in Hyderabad, the screenings were cancelled across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The other big release ‘Ganga’ (Kanchana 2), met the same fate as financial hiccups stalled the screening of the movie. The release of director and actor Lawrence’s movie was previously postponed too due to the poor financial situation of producer Bellamkonda Suresh. Producer and distributor Dil Raju then stepped in to take over the project.
Despite a slight delay, ‘Ganga’ started screening in all Qube and PXD theatres by 11 am and single screens started screening the noon shows. Even as confusion prevailed across theatre screens over the release of ‘Uttama Villian’ and ‘Ganga’, actor-producer Lakshmi Manchu decided to spice up the muddle by announcing the release of her movie ‘Dongata’ from noon. The movie was initially slated for release next Friday but Lakshmi had decided to cash in on the temporary delay of the other two movies.
However an hour after the claim, Lakshmi tweeted, “#Dongaata release date moved to 8th May. Alllllll the very best for Ganga and Uttama Villain. May these two soar!! (sic)”.Fans were expectedly let down due to the cancellation of the shows. “I was at Sandhya Theatre for the 11.30 am show of Uttama Villian along with my friends. We were told that the screening would be delayed by sometime.
But by around 11:40 am we were told that there would only be a matinee release of the movie. We waited in hope but later went home disappointed,” said one of Kamal’s fan Rajesh. There was however a silver lining for hardcore movie buffs in the form of Akshay Kumar’s ‘Gabbar is Back’ which saw many takers.
